Geography shapes the tapestry of history, and the story of Dutch settlement in America is intricately woven around a river that stretches a stunning one hundred and fifty miles from mountains to sea, carving its path through a lush and fertile landscape. This river served as a vital artery for trade and communication among colonies. Little did anyone know, on that fateful September day in 1609, when the small Dutch yacht named the Halve Maene, or Half Moon, captained by the intrepid Henry Hudson, glided past the sandy hook at Navesink Heights and anchored in what is now New Yorks outer harbor, it was the dawn of the Empire States remarkable evolution.
