fiction, kids, family, stories · EN

While George MacDonald is celebrated for his enchanting fantasy tales like At the Back of the North Wind and The Princess and the Goblin, he was once more renowned for his vivid, realistic novels. Among these is the semi-autobiographical gem, Ranald Bannermans Boyhood. This charming story follows a young boy, raised in a Scottish manse alongside his brothers, as he navigates the joys and challenges of childhood without his mother. The tale is rich with delightful characters—Kirsty, the captivating Highland storyteller; Turkey, the fearless cowherd; the menacing Kelpie; and the lovely Elsie Duff. Through his adventures, Ranald learns vital lessons about courage and integrity from his father. Upon its release in 1871, the New York Independent hailed it as full of sweetness, full of boy-life and true goodness. Indeed, it is a captivating narrative from a master storyteller.
