Sesame and Lilies delves into the profound questions of how, what, and why we read, exploring their relevance to how we live our lives. John Ruskin, in his reflections on earlier and later editions of this work, emphasizes its importance for young individuals from the upper and middle classes, who possess the means to shape their destinies. He believes these lectures encapsulate the core truths he has aimed to communicate throughout his career. This revised edition features two prefaces and three insightful lectures, including “Of Kings’ Treasuries” and “Of Queens Gardens.” Originally delivered in December 1864, these lectures highlight the transformative power of literature and the influence of remarkable women. The third lecture, Of the Mystery of Life and Its Arts, was added in 1871, enriching the discussion on the beauty of reading and honor.
