Contrasting True Faith with Nominal Christianity

religion, spirituality, christianity, history · EN

William Wilberforce, renowned as a pioneering advocate against the slave trade, embarked on his political journey in 1780 and served as an independent Member of Parliament for Yorkshire from 1784 to 1812. His conversion to Evangelical Christianity in 1785 profoundly transformed his life and ignited a passionate commitment to social reform. After dedicating four years to its creation, Wilberforce published A Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians in the Higher and Middle Classes of This Country Contrasted With Real Christianity in 1797. This compelling work boldly addresses the stark contrasts between genuine faith and mere nominalism, employing a blend of logical reasoning, personal anecdotes, and fervent calls for a spiritual revival. The book quickly gained traction, selling 7,500 copies in just six months and has since seen several revivals and updated translations.
