Avoid walking alone: If possible, walk with a friend or in a group, especially at night. Avoid shortcuts and isolated areas: Stick to well-lit and populated routes. Keep valuables out of sight: Don't flash expensive jewelry or electronics. Be cautious when using electronics: Avoid using your phone or listening to music while walking, especially in crowded or isolated areas. Have your keys ready: When approaching your home or car, have your keys ready to minimize the time you are vulnerable. Trust your instincts: If a situation or person makes you feel uncomfortable, leave the area and go to a safe place. Don't be afraid to make noise: If you feel threatened, yell for help or make a scene to deter an attacker, says Tennessee Tech University. Consider carrying a personal alarm: A personal alarm can be a useful tool to deter attackers.
