Amelia B. Edwards Thousand Miles up the Nile, originally published in 1877, is a captivating historical and cultural exploration of Egypt that quickly became a bestseller, with reprints in 1888 both in England and internationally. At a time when most women were expected to stay at home, Edwards boldly journeyed through Egypt, establishing herself as a pioneering Egyptologist. She later founded the Edwards Chair of Egyptology, which was first held by the renowned Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie. This seminal work not only laid the groundwork for future Egyptology but also significantly influenced contemporary authors, including Elizabeth Peters and her beloved Amelia Peabody Emerson murder-mystery series.
