In this thought-provoking article from 1945, the author critically explores the concept of a planned economy while advocating for the advantages of a decentralized market system, a perspective championed by Ludwig von Mises and the Austrian School of Economics. Hayek, renowned for making von Mises complex theories more accessible, delves into the vital role of localized information that decentralized economies harness—information that is often lost on central planners. He contrasts their theoretical models with real-world free market data, demonstrating through historical evidence that decentralized systems consistently yield superior outcomes.
