The Divine Comedy, known in Italian as the Divina Commedia, is a monumental epic poem crafted by Dante Alighieri in the early 14th century during his exile from Florence. This masterpiece is not only hailed as the pinnacle of Italian literature but also holds immense sway over the fabric of Western literature and culture. In this profound work, Dante traverses the three realms of the afterlife—Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory), and Paradiso (Paradise)—reflecting and expanding upon the Christian traditions of his time. Revered as The Father of the Italian Language, Dantes poetry elevated the Florentine Tuscan dialect to a national standard. Told in the first person, the poem chronicles Dantes transformative journey through the afterlife, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil in Hell and Purgatory, and by his idealized love, Beatrice, in Heaven. Join us as we explore this timeless narrative that has captivated hearts and minds for centuries. (Summary by Mary J)
