In April 1906, San Francisco faced devastating destruction from a massive earthquake followed by relentless fires. Will Irwin, who was living in New York at the time, captured the heart-wrenching essence of a city lost in a poignant article for The Sun titled The City That Was. Four years later, upon returning to San Francisco, he marveled at the remarkable transformation and resilience of the city, penning a second piece for The San Francisco Call called The City That Is. Irwins initial work gained widespread acclaim, solidifying his reputation as a talented reporter. Join us as we explore the profound changes in San Francisco through Irwins eyes, reflecting on both the tragedy and the rebirth of this iconic city.
