history, society, culture, documentary · EN

Lisa Pryce reflects on her Jamaican family’s migration to Britain through the story of her grandmother, Sadie, who arrived in Leeds from Jamaica as a teenager in the 1950s. She describes Sadie’s early struggles, marriage, move to London, and the devastating loss of two children in a house fire. The interview explores the experiences of the Windrush generation, including hard work, isolation, financial hardship, racism, immigration documentation, and the challenges of maintaining cultural connections. Lisa discusses her own British identity, her evolving relationship with Jamaican culture, and the importance of teaching Britain’s colonial history more openly and honestly in schools.
