Alcestis

arts, performing, fiction, drama · EN

Alcestis, the earliest surviving play by Euripides, tells the poignant tale of a devoted wife who willingly sacrifices her life for that of her husband, King Admetus. As the play opens, Alcestis is on the brink of death, prompting a powerful confrontation between Apollo and Thanatos (Death), where Apollo seeks to extend her life but is met with resistance. He departs with a promise that a savior will arrive in Pherae to rescue her. This unique work stands out as one of the most unconventional Greek dramas—an exploration of love, sacrifice, and the intricate boundaries between tragedy and comedy.
