Dive into the rich tapestry of English literature with A Brief History of English and American Literature, authored by Henry Augustin Beers, a Buffalo, NY native and esteemed Yale professor, in collaboration with John Fletcher Hurst, a Methodist bishop and the first Chancellor of American University. This expansive narrative spans nearly 900 years, chronicling the evolution of English literature up to the close of the 19th century. While some perspectives may seem biased‚such as Beers dismissal of Mark Twain as merely a time-bound humorist‚his research remains thorough and his critiques thought-provoking. Hurst contributes insightful summaries of religious and theological literature in the final chapters of each section. This book not only offers a unique viewpoint but also serves as an excellent gateway for those eager to explore the classics. (Summary by Kalynda)
