Metamorphosis or The Golden Ass

arts, books, fiction, history · EN

The Metamorphosis, also known as The Golden Ass, stands as one of the rare surviving novels from the Ancient World. It is one of only two complete novels from Roman literature, the other being the fragmented Satyricon. This enchanting tale follows a man transformed into a donkey, embarking on a series of wild adventures in his quest to regain his human form. Beyond its captivating narrative, the style of The Golden Ass is equally noteworthy. Regarded as a precursor to the picaresque novel, it blends humor and energy with moments of profound poetry, particularly in the beloved episode of Cupid and Psyche, which remains one of the most celebrated segments of Latin literature.
