In the final years of the Great War (WWI), the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) made its mark in Europe, accompanied by the esteemed New York Tribune war correspondent, Heywood Broun. Although Broun is often remembered for his work as a sports writer, drama critic, journalist, and social reformer—particularly his role as a member of the witty Algonquin Round Table alongside luminaries like Dorothy Parker and Robert Benchley—his unique insights into the AEFs experiences provide a captivating perspective on the conflict. Brouns writings not only illuminate the dynamic interactions between American forces and their European allies but also offer a glimpse into the challenges faced during this pivotal time. The narrative culminates with a reprint of General John J. Pershings initial report to the Secretary of Defense, detailing the scale of the U.S. effort and the obstacles surmounted for the AEFs success. (Dr.PGould)
