Gentle Grafter

fiction, comedy · EN

If Jefferson Parleyvoo Pickens had graced the pages of literature just a few years later, he might have earned the title Gentle Grifter instead of the Gentle Grafter that O. Henry bestowed upon him. As an ethical graft artist, Jeff faces unique challenges in his craft, but he relishes the complexity of his endeavors. The result is a collection of fourteen charming tales that introduce us to a range of new partners—one of whom is always by his side—as they navigate an array of confidence games. Some ventures flourish, while others falter, and surprises abound at every turn. No matter how predictable they seem, these stories seldom wrap up as expected. Ultimately, Jeff triumphs over most obstacles, save for his ongoing battle with the English language, which often proves a worthy adversary.
