Mäzli stands out as one of Madame Spyris most enchanting works, set against the backdrop of an ancient Swiss castle and the romantic tales of the noble family that resided there. The narrative unfolds through the lives of the charming Bergmann children, each with their own unique personalities and interests. Its hard to find a more delightful group of young characters or a more loving and wise mother. Each figure is vividly portrayed, showcasing their distinctive virtues and quirks, making it a miniature world that captivates adult readers as they eagerly recognize the traits of each child. Through the lens of naturalness, generosity, and forbearance, the story imparts valuable lessons not through lectures but through lived experiences. This tale is not only entertaining and wholesome but, in the best sense of the word, truly sweet. Readers of all ages will find joy and enrichment in Mäzli, avoiding the pitfalls of insipid literature. (Summary from the Foreword, written by Charles Whar
