Rights Of Man

history, news, politics, government · EN

In this powerful two-part work, published in 1791 and 1792, Thomas Paine boldly confronts Edmund Burkes defense of monarchy and critiques the opposition to the French Revolution. With clarity and wit, Paine explores the origins of monarchy and the inalienable rights of mankind, making complex ideas accessible to all. The second part delves into the advantages of constitutional government, advocating for republicanism and social welfare. Paines compelling arguments against hereditary rule and dictatorial governance were revolutionary for his time, ultimately leading to his imprisonment and a narrow escape from the guillotine. This audio rendition, thoughtfully divided into parts for easier listening, captures the essence of Paines vision—an early and complete articulation of republican principles that resonates even today.
