history, news, politics, science, social · EN

The campaign on Saipan, which began on June 15, 1944, marked a pivotal moment in the Pacific Theater. This intense battle resulted in heavy American casualties and set the stage for the brutal fighting that would characterize future operations across the Central and Western Pacific. Holland Smith famously called it “the decisive battle of the Pacific offensive,” as it cleared the path to the Japanese home islands. Meanwhile, Japanese General Saito ominously noted that “the fate of the Empire will be decided in this one action.” This battle was not just significant; it was a strategic turning point for the United States. - Summary by John C.
