Defense of Poesy

arts, books, society, culture, philosophy · EN

In Defense of Poesy, Sir Philip Sidney presents a vision of a world ideally structured to reward goodness and punish evil. Yet, this order has been compromised by sin and randomness. Sidney argues that poetry plays a crucial role in restoring this original harmony by educating and delighting its audience. This treatise not only champions the dignity of poetry—representative of literature as a whole—but also critiques the literary landscape of his time. While some of his criticisms may seem overly harsh to modern ears, they served to counter accusations of bias stemming from his idealistic views. Albert S. Cook, the editor of this edition, remarked in 1890 that Sidney stands as a pivotal figure bridging ancient literary theory with the romantic expressions of modernity, embodying the ethical convictions of a humanist alongside the imaginative breadth of a poet. - Summary by T.
