That’s why, when Emily Carter, a 26-year-old nursing student, stopped answering her phone, the silence felt wrong. Emily was dependable. She called her mother every night at 9:30 p.m. without fail. She texted her best friend before bed. She showed up early for her hospital shifts. But on a quiet Thursday evening, the calls didn’t come. At 10:15 p.m., Emily’s mother tried calling again. No answer. At 11:00 p.m., her phone went straight to voicemail. By morning, panic had set in.
