Experience Thomas Holcrofts captivating English translation of Pierre Beaumarchais groundbreaking French play, which he attended nine times during its original 1784 staging in Paris. This witty satire delves into the romantic antics and societal issues of its time, serving as a precursor to Mozarts iconic 1796 opera. Amidst the turbulence leading up to the French Revolution, Beaumarchais faced immense challenges getting his work past censors, yet it captivated audiences, including the aristocracy, who recognized its bold themes of class conflict. The play boldly showcases a commoner, Figaro, who is set to marry Susan—whose beauty has caught the eye of the relentless Count Almaviva. (Note Holcroft adapted Suzannes name for English audiences.) This production is the centerpiece of a trilogy, following The Barber of Seville and preceding The Guilty Mother. (Summary by Lynette Caulkins.)
