Vicar of Wakefield

Published in 1766, The Vicar of Wakefield is Oliver Goldsmiths only novel, crafted at a time when personal circumstances shaped creativity. It is said that Dr. Johnson helped Goldsmith secure £60 from a publisher to settle debts, allowing him to escape the clutches of his landlady. This heartwarming tale follows the life of Dr. Primrose, a compassionate vicar, and his family as they navigate the turbulent tides of fortune, ultimately finding their way back to grace. Rich in insights into 18th-century family life, the narrative is infused with elements reminiscent of a pantomime deception, impersonation, an aristocratic villain, and the abduction of a captivating heroine. Goldsmiths own experiences—spending his student days at Trinity College Dublin gambling and later traveling through Europe while playing the flute—echo in the adventures of Dr. Primroses son, who shares similar trials.
