Lift-Luck on Southern Roads

history, arts, books, society, culture · EN

Join me on a captivating solitary adventure as I traverse the picturesque southern counties of England, covering over two hundred miles. Embracing an unconventional approach, I avoid busy roads and major towns, instead seeking out the hidden lanes and charming by-paths. With nothing but a camera and a pack, I hitch rides in an array of vehicles, from farm wagons to pantechnicons, as I make my way to the sleepy town of Arundel. This journey, rich in experiences and encounters, offers a unique glimpse into the art of hitchhiking—one of the earliest documented accounts of this traveling method. So, come along with Mr. Edwardes and me as we venture off the beaten path and explore the stunning landscapes of Southern England at the turn of the last century.
