Horror stories are narrative works designed to evoke fear, dread, or terror in the audience, tracing back to ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia and Egypt. Origins and History: • Ancient Roots: The earliest written narratives, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh (circa 1700 BCE), feature monsters, ghosts, and underworld journeys. Early ghost and demon tales also appeared in ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian texts. • Gothic Tradition: Modern literary horror began during the 18th-century Gothic era. Horace Walpole's novel The Castle of Otranto (1765) established the genre, while Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818) introduced science fiction elements and moral warnings. • Psychological Horror: Authors like Edgar Allan Poe and E.T.A. Hoffmann later shifted the focus toward madness, human psychology, and eerie real-world ambivalence. 01 - Supernatural Horror in Literature by H. P. Lovecraft. Become a supporter of this podcast:
