Sesame and Lilies

arts, books, society, culture, philosophy, education, self improvement · EN

Sesame and Lilies delves into the profound questions of how, what, and why we read, all while exploring the deeper meanings of life itself. John Ruskin, in his reflections on the book, emphasizes its aim to guide young individuals from the upper and middle classes who possess the freedom to choose their lifes pursuits. He believes that when read alongside Unto This Last, it reveals the essential truths he has sought to convey throughout his life. This revised edition features two insightful prefaces and three engaging lectures “Of Kings’ Treasuries,” “Of Queens Gardens,” and the later addition, Of the Mystery of Life and Its Arts. Delivered in the mid-1860s, these lectures illustrate the enduring influence of great literature and the vital role of women in our understanding of the world—if only we learn to read and honor them.
