Step into the captivating world of early New Zealand with Philip Steer as he introduces us to the life and literary legacy of Frederick Edward Maning. Born in Dublin in 1811 or 1812, Maning immigrated to Tasmania with his family before making his mark in New Zealand from 1833 until 1882. Not only an author, but also a trader and a judge in the Native Land Court, he is best known for his enduring work, Old New Zealand A Tale of the Good Old Times (1863). This remarkable text has stood the test of time, remaining one of the few pre-twentieth century works about New Zealand that continues to resonate with readers today. Historian Peter Gibbons regards it as one of the most widely read accounts of early New Zealand, frequently reprinted and celebrated. Join us for a full introduction by Philip Steer.
