Dive into The Steel Flea, an enchanting comic tale penned by Nikolai Leskov in 1881. Presented in the captivating style of a traditional skaz, this story—born entirely from Leskovs imagination—follows a left-handed Russian artisan tasked with impressing Tsar Nicholas I through his craftsmanship. To outshine renowned English inventors who have created a tiny mechanical flea, the Russian smith secludes himself with two skilled colleagues in a workshop. As the suspense builds, he ultimately emerges to unveil the extraordinary fruit of their labor. More celebrated in Russia than in the West, The Steel Flea offers profound insights into 19th-century Russian perspectives on both the West and their own nation. Is it a tribute to Russian creativity or a subtle critique of autocracy? This timeless classic deserves a place alongside the great Russian literary figures.
