Dive into the groundbreaking ideas of Auguste Comte, the French philosopher who published this influential work in 1844. In General View of Positivism, Comte explores the evolution of society and the sciences, claiming to have discovered the principal laws of Sociology. He reflects on the tension between Reason and revolution, and addresses key social dynamics including the roles of trade unions, Proletariat workers, Communists, and Capitalists. Comte also examines the position of women in society and emphasizes the importance of Social Feeling over Self-love, alongside the influence of the Catholic Church. His vision seeks to replace theology with philosophy, aspiring to create a Religion of Humanity where Imagination yields to Reason, and Reason to Feeling. The essence of Positivism is encapsulated in his powerful conclusion Love, then, is our principle; Order our basis; and Progress our end.‚ This podcast features the 1908 edition of the book, narrated by Craig Campbell.
