Here’s the part of the story they usually leave out.Three years before the American Revolution, a court decision in England challenged the power of slave owners and terrified many colonial elites. The men who shouted “freedom” were often the same men fighting to protect slavery, expand plantations, and take Indigenous land. They called it liberty. But liberty for who? Before there was a United States, there were already nations here:Powhatan. Wampanoag. Lenape. Haudenosaunee. Cherokee. Choctaw. Muscogee. Navajo. Lakota. And hundreds more.Governments.Languages.Cultures.Civilizations.The Fourth of July is not just a story about independence. It is also a story about who was included in freedom — and who was intentionally left out.Be skeptical.Be analytical.Be informed.Stay dangerous.
