In this gripping chapter of Macaulay‚s History of England, we delve into the tumultuous insurrections against James II and the kings desperate maneuvers to quell them. The narrative follows Argyle, who, having taken refuge in Holland, returns to rally an army against James. Despite his courage and quick wit, Argyle proves to be an ineffective leader, leading his forces into chaos before being captured and meeting a brave end. We also witness Monmouths dramatic return from Holland, where he audaciously declares himself king on June 20, 1685. His subsequent defeat at the Battle of Sedgemoor and eventual execution casts him as a tragic hero in this historical account. The chapter concludes with the harrowing Bloody Assizes and the infamous Judge Jeffries. Summary by Jim Mowatt.
