Set against the backdrop of St. Helena Island in July 1863, North by Night immerses listeners in a fictional narrative inspired by the real-life experiences of Lieutenant Timothy Bradford, whose story echoes that of Captain V. B. Chamberlain of the Seventh Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. This regiment was part of an expeditionary force that arrived in South Carolina in October 1861, tasked with occupying coastal islands and establishing a strategic base for military operations aimed at Charleston. The narrative vividly recounts the Union troops occupation of Beaufort on Port Royal Island and their establishment of headquarters on Hilton Head Island. The harrowing first charge on Fort Wagner—known as Battery Wagner by the Confederates—captures the intense drama of one of the most formidable earthworks in modern warfare. A second charge took place just a week later, but it too was met with fierce resistance. Ultimately, Wagner fell to siege and was occupied by Union forces in September 1
