Medea, an iconic ancient Greek tragedy penned by Euripides, delves into the heart of a powerful myth surrounding Jason and his wife, Medea. First staged in 431 BCE, the narrative unfolds as Medea, a fierce and passionate barbarian, faces betrayal when Jason abandons her for a Greek princess in Corinth. In a desperate bid for vengeance, she commits unspeakable acts, including the murder of Jasons new bride and their own children, before fleeing to Athens to seek a new beginning. Initially shocking to its contemporary audience, Medea ultimately became a staple of the tragic repertoire and has garnered renewed interest, particularly during the feminist movement for its deep and empathetic exploration of a woman’s fight for autonomy in a male-dominated society. This play has captivated audiences and remains the most frequently performed Greek tragedy well into the 20th century. - Summary by Wikipedia (edited by Expatriate) This show includes AI-generated content.
