Memories of Childhoods Slavery Days

history, religion, spirituality, society, culture · EN

In this poignant and evocative autobiography, Annie Burton shares her memories of a carefree childhood spent as a slave on a Southern plantation amid the turmoil of the Civil War. After the Emancipation Proclamation, Annies life transformed as she faced the challenges of independence, striving to support her family while navigating the complexities of freedom as a person of color. The latter half of her narrative is enriched by powerful speeches, stirring poems, and hymns that ignited her religious fervor and deepened her pride in her heritage. Among these, Dr. P. Thomas Stanford’s impactful speech, The Race Question in America, not only provided historical insight but also inspired Annie and her readers to reflect thoughtfully on this crucial topic.
