Ponnamal, Her Story

fiction, drama, society, culture · EN

In the stillness of the night, a girl found herself alone, listening to the steady breaths of her sleeping mother-in-law nearby. She hesitated, then drew back the heavy iron bolts of the door, stepping out into the warm embrace of the night. Under the watchful gaze of the stars, she felt a surge of desperation. The weight of her widowhood had become unbearable, and the loneliness that enveloped her pushed her towards a choice she knew was both unreasonable and deeply wrong. Yet, in her heart, she believed she could endure no longer. This is the story of a girl who, like so many before her, sought an escape from the harshness of life in India.
