Henry Edward Manning (1808-1892) was an Oxford-educated Anglican clergyman who made a profound shift to Roman Catholicism after a pivotal Privy Council decision in 1850. Ordained as a priest in 1851, he later became the archbishop of Westminster in 1865 and was elevated to cardinal by Pope Pius IX in 1875. Manning noted that while Catholics of his time cherished the Sacrament of Penance, they often neglected its profound graces. This observation resonates with our current era, making his insights not only relevant but also enriching for both Catholics and non-Catholics alike. This shor
