In the genteel village of Tolethorp, social warfare is waged not with weapons but with whispers, as Lady Lavinia Locke and the widowed Countess Henrietta Cavendish vie for unquestioned supremacy. Their carefully balanced rivalry is upended by the arrival of a wealthy American family whose money, manners, and modernity threaten to upend tradition itself. In a town where reputation reigns, change may prove the most dangerous adversary of all.
