This compelling 1845 publication by a notable reformer passionately critiques capital punishment from multiple angles, including historical, philosophical, and biblical perspectives. Divided into three insightful chapters—Expediency, Justice, and Sacred Scriptures—the text weaves in Scripture references throughout. The author, Burleigh, engages in a thoughtful dialogue with George B. Cheever, a key advocate for the death penalty of that era. With the hope that this work will contribute, even modestly, to the advancement of humane reform and hasten the day when the laws of a Christian and civilized society are free from bloodshed, Burleighs dedication shines through. Join us as we explore these important themes and the ongoing debate about justice and morality. (Summary by TriciaG and from the preface)
