Experience the whimsical chaos of The Knight of the Burning Pestle, a groundbreaking play that first graced the stage in 1607. Recognized as the first full parody in English theatre, this clever satire takes aim at the romantic ideals of chivalric tales, much like Cervantes Don Quixote. From the very beginning, the play shatters the fourth wall as a Citizen and his Wife audaciously interrupt a performance of The London Merchant, insisting that their apprentice, Rafe, should take on the role of a knight errant. With the title Grocer Errant and a burning pestle emblazoned on his shield, Rafes adventures intertwine with the story of Jasper Merrythought, a lovesick apprentice intent on eloping with his masters daughter, Luce, to escape a loveless marriage. Amidst the comedy, Jaspers mother seeks to leave her reckless husband, Old Merrythought, whose mid-life crisis leads him to squander their savings on revelry.
