Travels in the Interior of Africa

history, arts, books, science, social · EN

Join Mungo Park, a daring Scottish surgeon and explorer, as he embarks on a remarkable journey into the heart of Africa. Sent by the Association for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior of Africa after Major Houghton’s mysterious disappearance, Park sought to uncover the truth about the River Nigers origins—whether it was linked to the Senegal or Gambia rivers. His expedition was fraught with peril, from language barriers and cultural differences to imprisonment and robbery. Armed only with tattered clothes, a horse, a pocket compass, and a hat for his notes, he followed the Gambia River before becoming the first European to reach the mighty Niger River at Ségou. Continuing another 80 miles to Silla, he faced the harsh reality of limited supplies, forcing him to turn back. Parks incredible adventure is a testament to human resilience and curiosity, ultimately leading him home by boat via America. (Summary by Lynda Marie Neilson) This show includes AI-generated content.
