Join writer and entertainer Garrison Keillor as he delves into “The Innocents Abroad,” a travel classic that has captivated readers for generations. Mark Twains (Samuel Clemens) journey through 19th-century Europe and the Near East is not just a simple travelogue; it’s a revealing exploration of culture and humanity. Setting off in June 1867, Twain and his fellow “pilgrims” embark on a quest to visit renowned sites in Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, the Holy Land, and Egypt. With a blend of humor and keen observation, Twain captures the often surprising realities of travel, contrasting them with the preconceived notions shaped by education and rumor. While the journey may reveal some uncomfortable truths—including the prejudices of the era—Twain’s sharp wit and insight guide listeners through the highs and lows of this enlightening adventure. So, take your time and enjoy the ride, just as Twain intended. (Summary by John Greenman) This show includes AI-generated content.
